Planning All Types of Effective FLES* Programs

  1. Assess community/school interests, needs and resources

  2. Organize a FLES* Advisory Committee

  3. Determine the resources of the school and the community

  4. Formulate realistic goals

  5. Develop a rationale for the programs

  6. Anticipate difficulties, problems, roadblocks, etc.

  7. Investigate successsful programs

  8. Contact knowledgeable people

  9. Prepare a detailed proposal for a pilot program

  10. Arrange for coordination and supervision

  11. Develop a scope and sequence and curriculum materials to fulfill the realistic goals

  12. Develop a plan for the recruitment and training of teachers

  13. Promote interest in and publicity for the program

  14. Involve secondary school foreign language teachers

  15. Select and order instructional materials for the pilot program

  16. Arrange realistic teaching schedules

  17. Begin the pilot program

  18. Evaluate! Evaluate! Evaluate!

  19. Be prepared for successes and failures

  20. Attempt to solve conflicts and unexpected reactions

  21. Make modifications...Enjoy the program!
