Guiding Principles in Implementing FLES* Programs
- All K-8 Elementary school students should have the opportunity to start a FLES* program, before the age of 10 (based on brain research studies).
- All four program models (Sequential FLES, Sequential FLEX, Exploratory and Immersion) are valid foreign language programs, provided that they fulfill their goals.
- All four program models contribute, in different ways, to a K-12 foreign language program.
- There is no one way to provide FLES* instruction, nor is there only one best method of FLES* instruction.
- Not all students will want to pursue the same foreign language, K-12. Therefore, in order to address individual preferences and multiple intelligences, there must be multiple entry/exit points provided.
- A school or school district may consider having all four program models available, depending on the goals, and the availability of FLES* teachers.
- More than one language is offered in a school district's FLES* program.
FLES* includes: Sequential FLES, Sequential FLEX, Exploratory (several languages) and Immersion.
