Guiding Principles in Implementing FLES* Programs

  1. All K-8 Elementary school students should have the opportunity to start a FLES* program, before the age of 10 (based on brain research studies).

  2. All four program models (Sequential FLES, Sequential FLEX, Exploratory and Immersion) are valid foreign language programs, provided that they fulfill their goals.

  3. All four program models contribute, in different ways, to a K-12 foreign language program.

  4. There is no one way to provide FLES* instruction, nor is there only one best method of FLES* instruction.

  5. Not all students will want to pursue the same foreign language, K-12. Therefore, in order to address individual preferences and multiple intelligences, there must be multiple entry/exit points provided.

  6. A school or school district may consider having all four program models available, depending on the goals, and the availability of FLES* teachers.

  7. More than one language is offered in a school district's FLES* program.

FLES* includes: Sequential FLES, Sequential FLEX, Exploratory (several languages) and Immersion.
